I happened to watch Ram Gopal Varma a few times on TV and he impressed me to a good deal. I cannot remember any well known director from Telugu/Hindi cinema to make such an open statement to public that he makes films for his satisfaction but not for society/people. I am amazed the way he puts it upfront without any serious thinking behind it. Once on a businness channel, he explained the businness angle of movie making. I am impressed to note that he decides the target audience first for his script and then go ahead to decide the budget. I am not sure if there are other directors doing the same thing. I doubt if these directors take as much risk as this gentle man does. I think Varma's assistants are exception to all this. They take a bit of risk and construct ideas as their boss does. Road, Daud and Shool are too good examples to explain this. I cannot imagine another well known director doing atleast a 'Road' for us. Who can dare to make a 'Gayab' for the Indian audience?
Coming to his recent direct movie in Telugu, Madhyahnam Hathya (Afternoon Murder), the caption was objected by a lot of women's organisations. I do not see any reason why they should make a lot of hue and cry. It looks like they are facing genuine identity crisis. Here is a man tries to portray a bloody man, who is impressed to kill his wife for various reasons. It is always the movie makers who are influenced by the society to make movies but not the other way round. Movie makers have to mix a variety of sensibilities to a live incident, if the movie has to become a commercial hit. I will definitely post more on this movie after watching the movie. I WISH THIS CHAP ALL THE VERY BEST FOR ALL HIS FUTURE VENTURES.
