There is a best coder/designer/whatever in a team. He is like THE MAN in the team who can throw a solution that would definitely prove its merits. He is seen as a person to be approached for any damn tough technical issue. Most of his solutions fetched the organization millions of dollars over a period of time directly or indirectly.
It was obvious decision by the management to promote and pay him better after all he has the stature of INDIANA JONES. Indiana Jones continued to deliver as per the expectations. Management could not resist promoting him up in the ladder.
Now, he has more responsibilities as he has been given a team of four engineers. His job now demands him to spend more time assigning the tasks, reviewing the work, motivating people to deliver, and managing the work and so on and so forth. He is not doing what he is best at. He finds the four engineers mediocre and not up to his level of expectations. He finds them slow, weak in their tech skills and to get the work done they are being pushed hard and hard every time. Mutual resentment resulted and management started questioning his abilities. Indiana Jones of past started to realize that he is being evaluated on his abilities to lead the team but not on his tech skills – unfair after all. He decides to find a way out and eventually leaves the organization. Organization now lost a person with great abilities and remains in the hands of resentful attitudes.
Similar stories happen in lot of organizations everyday. Yet, companies insist on promoting their best tech workers to managerial roles. Some force some management lessons on them thinking that it all would be OK over a period of time. Management is not Science or Mathematics but is definitely an art.
